Autumnal Reflections (2022)

It’s been a while since my last post and a lot has happened in between time. I plan to write a separate post to cover news about our new home base, following purchase of a house back in September and moving out of the rented accommodation.

Meanwhile with the autumn colours in full swing up here in the Highlands, the weather was looking compliant at the weekend to get out with the camera for the first time for a number of months. I decided on a road trip to Glen Cannich. This was with the hope of capturing both the colours of autumn as well as reflections, since the wind speed was predicted to be low according to my phone weather apps.

I left before sunrise (not a hardship at this time of the year!) and travelled down the scenic road to Cannich with misty views across the glen, and a thought about stopping on the return journey to try and capture the atmosphere (after noticing one particular view I passed with the car).

There was slight disappointment after reaching the dam at the top of Glen Cannich to find too much of a breeze for good reflections. Also the cloud cover to the east was inhibiting the rising sun from casting its rays over the mountain tops. I grabbed a record photo with the mobile phone before heading away in the car.

As I left, I noticed the loch under the dam was very calm and decided to park up and wait for the sun to rise higher until it clipped the tops of the distant mountains so I could get the full impact of the view with a multi-shot panoramic.

Despite the gentle breeze on the main loch behind the dam, further down the glen it was very calm with some beautiful views across the landscape with more reflections in store.

As I travelled further back towards Cannich the sun started to break through the cloud again and created some great lighting. I pulled the car over to wander along the river to soak in the views.

Leaving the glen and returning up the Cannich road towards Beauly I was well pleased to see that the mist was still very evident from the cold temperatures. It was hovering over the river as it wound its way along the glen running alongside the road at a number of places. It provided some super opportunities for atmospheric photos.

It was time to return home, with a slight diversion on the way to get some ‘autumn’ photos of a tree I’ve been recording through the seasons. I plan a separate blog to cover the seasonal changes of the tree, but as a taster here is a single photo of each of the Spring, Summer, Autumn captures:

Until next time …
