As we progressed through November the late autumn colours started to deepen and fade as the wintry temperatures started to arrive.
Always looking for opportunities to photograph reflections, this particular weekend presented a possible opportunity, with low wind speed predicted. On Saturday afternoon I therefore headed up north of us on the Ullapool road hoping that Loch Droma would be calm. You can imagine the excitement on arriving to see a mirror like reflection over the loch. It wouldn’t last very long, but was sufficient to get a number of photos.
The views across the loch to the snow dusted An Teallach ridges were stunning, giving a superb backdrop to the loch.
Being out towards golden hour provided a great opportunity to capture the low setting sun light as it brushed the mountain tops.
This photo trip turned out to be just one part of an active weekend with the camera, when later that evening we were treated with a superb aurora. After taking a selection of photos from the garden, we headed off to Loch Achilty to see if we would make it in time to try and get some aurora reflections in the loch. It didn’t turn out quite as hoped but shows the potential for future opportunities. Here’s a selection of all the photos.
The last chance for a photo outing this month was on the Sunday afternoon when the air was extremely still, so I headed off to Glen Cannich again.
As I journeyed up the glen the initial loch was covered in ripples so I wasn’t that confident that the main loch would provide much in the way of reflections! Optimism increased however when I passed more bodies of water up the glen that were completely still and reflecting the munros in the background.
I found Loch Mullardoch very calm, in between moments when the breeze picked up. The setting sun created some lovely atmosphere.
After waiting for sunset to see whether the sky was provide any colour, I headed back down the glen, picking up a few photos in very low light looking back to the darkening skies…
It felt like it had been a busy weekend out with the camera - but with impending rain and wintry weather predicted for the coming week, it was well worth getting out to make the most of the opportunities.
