Glen Torridon Cloud Inversion - Boxing Day 2025

It felt like a long time since I’d been out on any sort of photography trip (hike or road trip). So with the forecast looking good for Boxing Day, I summoned up the motivation to get up and out at a reasonable hour, assisted by the sunrise being around 9.00am on this chilly Boxing Day morning.

The plan was to head for Loch Clair at the top of Glen Torridon, hoping for a frosty morning with reflections on the loch as the wind speed was predicted to be very low. The weather however didn’t comply on this morning with heavy low mist almost all the way there and every loch showing ripples even though there was no noticeable wind.

It was pointless stopping at the loch on the journey in, so we headed down Glen Torridon, hoping to get views of Ben Alligin as the sun rose. As we approached Torridon we left the mist behind us, confirming that it was a full cloud inversion down the glen (more about that later).

We pulled into a suitable parking spot on the other side of Loch Torridon and had some great views of Beinn Alligin as the low rising sun ‘scorched’ the top of the munro peaks.

From the viewpoint we could see the cloud inversion back up Glen Torridon and it gave us ideas for some opportunities with the drone.

Off my son and I went back up the glen stopping off where we would have parked to visit Loch Clair and after heading up the slopes from the road to gain some height I was able get some great views down the glen above the ‘clouds’.

On the return journey it was possible to get some good views down Loch a Chroisg - a loch I’ve passed so many times over the years.

All things considered it was a very pleasant trip out. I came away with a completely different set of photos than I had originally intended, but re-igniting the interest to try and get out more into the beautiful countryside around us.
